Giovanni Bononcini on reading in all keys and clefs using a six note solmisation system (1678)

Writer's picture: Tim BraithwaiteTim Braithwaite

*Notes*

- The system (c.1500-1800) is based on three overlapping ’hexachords’ of six syllables - do re mi fa sol la.

- In order to change from one hexachord to another, the singer needs to ‘mutate.’

- The manner by which one mutates is by adopting ‘re’ of the new hexachord when ascending and ‘la’ when descending.

- In order to sing in different keys and clefs, the singer imagines the ‘do’ in several different places on the stave.
